Common Causes of
Heartburn
Heartburn or Acid Reflux is generally caused by
stomach acids finding there way back up into the esophagus. At the base of the
esophagus where it meets the stomach, you have a sphincter (or lower esophageal
sphincter- LES), that acts like a one way valve. It allows
foods and drinks coming from your mouth, through the esophagus and into your
stomach, but prevents your stomach contents from finding their way back into
your esophagus. The most common cause of heartburn occurs when the LES doesn't
do it's job, and allows acids from your stomach back into the esophagus, causing
pain and irritation or HEARTBURN.
The following items are commonly
thought to contribute to heartburn. It is often recommended that you
monitor your intake or avoid them completely.
-Coffee, Tea or other caffeine
products -Fried or Fatty foods
-Tomato Based Foods
-Chocolate
-Spicy Foods
-Citrus Fruits and spicy
-Tobacco
-Alcohol these are all believed to
effect the function of the LES
-Large meals
-Eating just before bed
-Wearing tight fitting clothes these put pressure on
the LES and can cause heartburn.
Symptoms
While heartburn
has nothing to do with your heart, the pain comes from your lower chest, and
can be quite intense. Your stomach produces hydrochloric acid to help keep
bacteria from growing in the stomach and intestines. Your stomach also has a
lining that protects it from these acids. The esophagus does not.
Heartburn has been described as a burning sensation, which is caused from
acids being washed over an unprotected esophagus. Other symptoms are a
feeling of food being caught in the lower esophagus, or a dull pain in the
lower chest.
